Dealing with a Commercial Flood Damage Incident in Bellmore Involving Sewage Backup
A bout of heavy rain can turn small water bodies like the cedar swamp creek or even regular driveways into rivers of flowing water that flood property causing significant losses. One such incident within Bellmore led to sewer backup and other problems that affected a local dry cleaner, forcing it close down for cleanup and other restoration steps.
Although losses are expected after commercial flood damage incidents in Bellmore, sewage backup aggravates the situation. At the dry cleaner, rising groundwater had gained entry into the property in many ways, including the door, and also forced its way through the backed-up sewer line. Our SERVPRO team had to extract water, cleanup, and carry out other steps to sanitize the property since sewage is a biohazard.
The rows of clothes, lining up the storage area, presented the first challenge because they made it difficult to perform most of the restoration processes, including cleaning and drying. Our SERVPRO crew chief had anticipated this problem and brought a storage pod, allowing us to store the items safely within the shop during restoration.
After moving the contents out of the way, we embarked on the restoration process. We sprayed an EPA-registered disinfectant directly into the pools of floodwater to control the level of contamination. We then embarked on water removal using a self-priming trash pump since the water was included sold wastes. We also shoveled the remaining solid residues into heavy-duty plastic bags for disposal.
We finalized the process by deep cleaning all surfaces with a mixture of hot water, professional cleaning agents, and vigorous agitation with rotating brushes to remove any traces of the sewage. We also extracted the water used during cleaning and run air movers and dehumidifiers to help dry the property faster, reducing the chances of microbial growth.
